It’s A Wonderful Life:
A Live Radio Play
adapted by Joe Landry
director’s notes by Colleen Cherry
“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans” has always been my favorite John Lennon lyric, and how I learned that lesson at a young age. A lesson that could have benefitted the hero of our story before his divine intervention – but then we wouldn’t have this beautiful story, would we?
It’s a Wonderful Life is timeless because so many of us can relate to George Bailey who is constantly fighting his fate and reaching for what we’re taught makes us successful – money, a high-powered career, travel to faraway lands – that he almost misses out on the beautiful life he’s created through the good he’s done in his own community.
Our own community has been through so much this year, with many who are still recovering from the devastating impacts of the hurricanes. I witnessed so many examples of people coming together to support each other, neighbors and strangers alike, in these last few months – much like the people of Bedford Falls came together to uplift George in his time of need. And so many who lost their homes and possessions expressed endless gratitude that they still had what mattered most – their family and friends.
This play is not only a love letter to Frank Capra’s classic film, but a love letter to our community here in Tampa Bay at the end of a very challenging year. It’s our gift to you. Thank you for being a part of our community.
Thanks for the wings.
