These Three

It’s just about here – the opening show of our fifth season.  We hope you’ll join us for this season of American Visions, starting with Lillian Hellman’s classic play, The Children’s Hour.

The Children’s Hour takes off when Mary Tilford (Olivia Sargent, pictured above with Nikki Monson and Hayden Murphy as Evelyn Munn and Peggy Rogers) decides that she can get her way by telling a lie about her teachers.  This lie, like so many in today’s world of social media and cyberbullying, leads to disaster.   Kerry Reid, responding to a recent Chicago production, said that “Hellman’s observations on the corrosive effects of a vicious lie remain relevant. . . .”  Megan Powell, another Chicago critic, added This play may be about a lie, but the reverberations of the ounce of truth in it continue to be felt eight decades later.”  We agree – and think you will, too, especially after experiencing the sterling cast led by Emily Belvo and Katie Castonguay as Karen and Martha (the two teachers) under the direction of Emilia Sargent.

“In our world where it’s so easy to slander someone and spread malicious rumors at the click of a mouse, a play like The Children’s Hour . . . feels like an ominous precursor of things to come.” Jay Irwin, Broadway World.com

See you at the theatre.
